Damn Kids
I started to learn guitar when I was 17. My best friend and I were, at the time, quite divergent in terms of musical taste. But we did share an appreciation for the work of Weird Al Yankovic, and a strange fascination with AC/DC.
These two overlapped and resulted in a common goal: to record a parody of "You Shook Me All Night Long" called, in honor of Bon Scott, "You Choked On Your Own Puke." We really wanted to get it on the Dr. Demento show, even though we could only hear that show on irregular Saturday nights. Real late, too. Plus, I would prefer to listen to The Root of All Evil, a metal show still on late Saturday nights.
So we got guitars, formed a band, then learned to play. Luckily I was able to bully my girlfriend's brother into playing drums. He actually had some training.
We never did record that parody, but we did record these songs one day in my friend's basement using two cheap plastic mics run into an old cassette recorder.
Unfortunately, we went to a more thrashy direction, so I lost my best friend. We brought in a new singer, we got my first paying gigs at a local teen club that booked metal and punk shows.
